ANIMAL INFORMATION

Raccoons: Raccoons are one of the most commonly dealt with nuisance animal species here in East Tennessee. They are very capable and adaptable creatures, and I consider them very intelligent and talented. They have very nimble hands, they are very strong, and they are excellent climbers. For these reasons, they commonly break into houses, where they like to live, raise young, and steal food. Many raccoons have no fear of people (or dogs), and thus commonly come into conflict with humans in urban settings. Squirrels: Possibly the "classic" and most common nuisance species throughout North America, and Tennessee is no exception. The Eastern Gray Squirrel is incredibly agile and simply loves to live inside the attics of people's homes, and will chew its way inside. Squirrels have two litters of young per year, and prefer to raise them in a safe place, such as your attic. Once inside, these rodents, like all rodents, will often chew on wood and wires, not to mention the noise they make running around up there. Opossums: Possums are everywhere in the East Tennessee. These marsupials are usually gentle and slow. However, several aspects of their behavior bring them into conflict with people. First of all, as scavengers, they frequently get into people's pet food and garbage. Secondly, they frequently enter attics - and once inside, they really make a mess! Third, they don't live very long, and they seem to prefer to die inside an attic or wall or under a house, so they are my most common carcass removal. Rats: Rats are probably the single most commonly dealt with nuisance animal. Rats invade any home with any small opening leading inside. They usually enter merely for warmth and shelter, but also for food. Once inside, they make a lot of scurrying and scratching noises, but they also chew on wires, defecate and urinate everywhere, and often enter the home and raid the pantry. They are nocturnal, and amazingly fast and agile. Moles: The Eastern Mole is common in yards. They are sub-terranian, and dig a network of tunnels and even chambers underground. They dig through the soil with their powerful claws, and people often object to the surface tunnels that they create - including the numerous feeding tunnels that they dig while searching out earthworms, grubs, and other insects. I don't consider the mole an serious pest species, because the damage is not severe, and they don't pose any health risks. Birds: The most common pest bird in the wildlife control industry is the pigeon, as seen to the left. Pigeons are common in urban areas, and live very well in conjunction with people. They often roost in public areas, such as on building ledges, beams, and store signs. They also frequently live in attics, and I often deal with groups of pigeons living in the attics of homes, condos, and apartment buildings. The problems are the usual with nuisance animals - noise, and a whole lot of unsightly and unsanitary excrement. Bats: Bats are amazing creatures, and are my favorite animals to deal with. Many superstitions and misconceptions surround this peaceful and beneficial animal. The nuisance bats that I deal with are always colonizing bats - usually a maternity group of females, roosting together in a large group inside a building. Even though the animals are good for insect control, they can form huge groups, and cause significant noise and especially odor problems with their thousands of droppings and gallons of urine. Snakes: Tennessee is home to perhaps 45 species of snakes, and most of them are completely harmless. East Tennessee has three species of venomous snake - the Eastern Diamondback Rattler, the Copperhead, the Cottonmouth. These snakes are not terribly common, and the simple way to avoid conflict is to stay away when you see one of these species. The rest should be enjoyed and admired, or at least not treated with fear and disdain. The general rule for any snake: just leave it alone! Dead Animals: It's a fact of life - death. Of wild animals, in your home or on your property. Every animal on this list eventually dies, and when they do, decay and odor is usually the case. If the animal happens to take its last breath inside your house, get ready for a tremendous odor within. The most common dead animals that I extract from homes are rats and opossums. Both of these animals have short life spans and a knack for getting inside of buildings. Dead carcass removal is a necessary part of wildlife management.

The above are the main species involved in Tennessee wildlife management. There are other animals as well, of course, such as black bears, bobcats, flying squirrels, gophers, mice, fox & coyote, stray cats and more, but I the above animals account for most of the nuisance wildlife control calls. As a state licensed wildlife trapper, I can handle all of the above pictured animals, but I do not handle or black bears, or any animal under special regulation by the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency. Nor will they, or any city or county agency, such as the county animal services, handle a private residence problem with wildlife. If you hear those scurrying and scratching noises in your attic, you must hire a professional wildlife management company such as mine to handle your problem - believe me, it's usually very detail-oriented work, the kind that requires a great deal of special knowledge and tools, and is best left to a professional. Zoonotic Diseases: Zoonotic diseases are diseases that are transferred from animals to people. While common sense can often prevent transmission of many diseaes, others, such as those transferred through contamination from animal waste, are harder to avoid. Read the below descriptions of various diseases, sorted by common Florida nuisance wildlife species. Please be careful around any wildlife, and if your home or property has been invaded by wild critters, please take care to avoid the waste these animals have left behind, and consider having your attic cleaned. Fleas: I commonly encounter fleas in my wildlife removal work. Sometimes it's just an annoying matter of having these parasites bite me. Sometimes the homeowner with a wild animal in/under the house must deal with an onset of fleas on their pets. The bites are not pleasant, but fleas are also known to carry Murine Typhus Fever, which is caused by Rickettsia typhi, an organism present throughout FL. Rats are the most common carriers of the disease. Fleas are also implicated in the transmission of Bubonic Plague, which is now rare. Lice: Head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) are parasitic insects found on the heads of people and can host with many types of wildliufe. Lice don't cause any disease, but most people would prefer not to have lice. It's unlikely to contract lice from a wild animal, but lice are just an example of many types of parasites that wild animals carry that can also choose humans as a host. Mites: Can be found on a variety of wild animals and birds, and certain species are responsible for causing Sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabei) in humans. Mites are directly transferred by contact, and result in a spreading scabby exuding and intensely itchy skin lesion, infested with microscopic mites. These mites may be present on a variety of wildlife species and the areas they inhabit, such as your walls or attic. Ticks: Are notorious parasites, and found on just about any mammal. They are most well known as carriers of Lyme Disease, which is caused by the Borreliaburgdorferi bacteria and is transmitted by several species of ticks and fleas. The symptoms generally progress through �flu-like� symptoms such as fatigue, fever, sore throat, nausea and coughing. Later arthritis sets in, usually in the knee and elbow joints Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is a disease caused by the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii. It can be transmitted to people by several species of ticks Raccoon Diseases: Rabies is the most commonly cited disease associated with raccoons. Raccoon Roundworm (Baylisascaris procyonis & B. columnaris) is caused by contact with infected raccoon feces, which can pass the sticky and durable eggs to humans. Contracting this disease occurs by accidental ingestion or inhalation of the eggs. Infection of humans can lead to larval parasite migration to the central nervous system. Giardia lamblia is a protozoan causing diarrhea associated with ingesting food or water contaminated by raccoon excrement. Trypanosoma cruzi is associated with raccoon excrement as are Rickettsia rickettsii, Leptospirosis, and Salmonella. Squirrel Diseases: Squirrels are typically common vectors of disease. Like all animals, squirrels can carry parasites, they leave behind excrement, and they can leave both in your attic. Squirrel droppings, like pretty much any wildlife dropping, are associated with Leptospirosis and Salmonella. Opossum Diseases: Opossums have a spectacular immune system, and a lower than average body temperature. This means that they don't carry a whole lot of the standard zoonotic diseases that other animals might carry. Although an opossum might get rabies, it's very unlikely. However, opossums do often carry fleas and other parasites, and the potential diseases that go along with those. They also defecate, a lot, and when they get in your attic the droppings can contaminate the area and pose the usual excrement health risks, such as leptospirosis or Salmonella. Rat Diseases: The most famous case of zoonotic disease in human history is the Bubonic plague, or Black Death of the Middle Ages. This disease is still present today in the US, though far less common. Over 30 different types of disease are associated with rats and their droppings. They include Rat-bite fever (Streptobacillus moniliformis bacteria), which is transferred from rats to humans by the bite of a rat. Rickettsia virus can create a condition similar to chicken pox. Hantavirus is outlined below. Eosinophilic Meningitis is an infection of the brain, and caused by rat lung worm angiostrongylus cantonensis. The droppings of rats can cause Leptospirosis or Salmonellosis. Bird Diseases: Bird such as pigeons can carry a number of parasites and mites, but the most common disease associated with urban pigeon problems is histoplasmosis, a fungal disease that humans can get by breathing in the fungal spores that can grow on pigeon droppings. It is common to encounter pigeons inside buildings and attics, and they often leave a great quantity of droppings, which can result in airborne health hazard. Other fungal diseases associated with pigeon droppings include Cryptococcosis and Psittacosis. Bat Diseases: Bats are actually the most common transmitter of the rabies virus in North America. This may be due to a number of reasons. First, bats are common inside homes, and may sneak down a wall and into the living space. Second, bites are small and thus may go undetected, or treated as less severe. Third, some subtle factor, perhaps a variant of the disease or a concentration in the saliva, seems to make bat rabies more likely to infect people. Bat droppings are also prone to grow histoplasmosis fungal spores, and bat droppings can really accumulate in an attic. Snake Diseases: Most people are more concerned with snake venom than with diseases. However, even a non-venomous snake can cause bacterial infection via its seemingly harmless bite. All snakes can carry the Salmonella species of bacteria. Contact with snakes has been directly implicated in human Salmonellosis outbreaks, and the snakes typically exhibit no signs of illness themselves. Dead Animal Diseases: A rotting animal carcass stinks. You don't want to touch it or get near it anyway. Always wear a HEPA respirator mask and gloves when dealing with dead animals, and spray down the area thoroughly with a disinfectant. Oftentimes, hundreds of fleas will still cover a dead animal. There's a myriad of diseases associated with dead animals, but the advice is to have them professionally removed and cremated. Rabies is a viral disease (caused by rhabdovirus) that can infect any warm-blooded mammal, but is usually confined to a few key wildlife species such as raccoons, skunks, canines, and bats. Infection is relatively rare in the United States, due to high levels of awareness of the disease and strong preventative measures taken here. Worldwide, dogs are the primary cause of infection, but in the US, our animals are well-vaccinated. Of wild animals most people seem to associate raccoons with rabies, but it is actually bats that account for most cases of infection in the US. The virus attacks the nervous system, traveling from bite site to the brain, where the virus replicates. Once symptoms appear, the disease is 100% fatal. A rabid animal may be very aggressive or lethargic and behave in an unusual manner - random walking, attacking inanimate objects, no fear of people, no alertness, frothing at the mouth, etc. Many people call me to report a rabid raccoon because it is out during daylight hours. Although a normally nocturnal animal with rabies may be active during the day, many healthy raccoons are as well. However, definitely do not approach any raccoon exhibiting abnormal behavior, such as erratic walking, walking in circles, paralyzed hind legs, and other abnormal behavior. Another common misconception I hear from people is that animals always carry rabies and can transmit it at any time. This is not true. A rabid animal transmits the virus via its saliva, usually by biting, and this contagious stage is brief, during the animal's last few days before death, and is accompanied by the strange behaviors mentioned. A healthy animal, behaving normally, would not have the virus in its saliva. If you've been bitten by a wild animal, seek medical attention immediately. You may want post-exposure rabies treatment, which includes a shot of immunoglobulin and some shots of vaccine. The virus usually has an "incubation" period of 2-4 weeks before the fatal symptoms occur. If you have access to the animal that bit you, such as a pet or a bat, you can send it to a lab for testing. Histoplasmosis is a respiratory infection caused by the Histoplasma capsulatum fungus. The fungus is often found in soil with high organic and nitrogen content. Infection occurs when spores of the fungus are inhaled. Histoplasmosis is associated with bat and pigeon roosts, because excrement from these animals provides an ideal environment for the fungus. Histoplasmosis infection may take many forms, and symptoms of the disease are variable. The commonly symptom is a mild respiratory trouble which may go undiagnosed. However, severe cases resembling tuberculosis also occur. The risk of infection can be reduced by avoiding dust in such areas as bird roosts and the insides of attics inhabited by birds and bats.Leptospirosis is caused by the bacterium Leptospira interrogans. It affects a wide variety of wildlife species, including skunks and raccoons. Human cases of leptospirosis usually are transmitted from commensal rodent populations. In some cases, this disease can be very serious and life threatening. Symptoms include fever, headaches, weakness and vomiting.Salmonella Bacteria that exist in pretty much all wildlife droppings and several serotypes are pathogenic to humans and other animals. Salmonellosis can lead to severe cases of gastroenteritis, enteric fever septicemia (blood poisoning), and death. Food poisoning, the most common malady, is characterized by a sudden onset of abdominal pain, diahrrea, nausea, and vomiting. One common means of transmission is through food contaminated by rat or mouse feces that contain Salmonella organisms.Hantavirus is a viruse that can cause febrile illness in humans and sometimes kidney, blood, or respiratory ailments, and can sometimes be fatal. The symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting and lower back pain. Rodents such as rats and mice are the primary vectors for viruses in this group and these viruses are found across the US. Infected rodents leave viruses in their urine, feces and/or saliva and can remain chronically infected. The droppings from infected rodents are believed the be the source of both airborn and direct transmission to other rodents and humans.Bubonic Plague is caused by the bacterium Yersenia pestis and can be found in rodents, most commonly rats. Fleas transmit plague from animal to animal. Early symptoms of bubonic plague include fever, confusion, and fatigue. Untreated bubonic plague has a relatively high fatality rateTularemia (caused by Franciella tularensis) is a severe bacterial disease carried by rodents that is readily transmissible to humans who come into contact with contaminated food or droppings. The organism can penetrate intact undamaged skin. In humans the bacteria rapidly grows in the blood, produces high fever, and can lead to death if it goes undiagnosed and untreated.Yersiniosis (caused mainly by Y. enteorcolitica in people) is an organism carried by wild birds and mammals that concentrates in water bodies, and people that drink that water can be exposed to very high doses. Yersiniosis symptoms include diarrhea, enlarged lymph nodes in the gastrointestinal tract and an appendicitis-like syndrome.

What do you do with the animals once they are captured?If the animal is healthy and it is legal to do so, I relocate it far outside the city at one of several privately owned relocation points at which I have permission to release wild animals. It is not legal to relocate wildlife to public lands, so if you trap your own animal (and this one step probably won't solve your wildlife problem) don't bring it down to the local park. All relocated wildlife should be brought at least ten miles from the capture site, and released in an area in which it won't pose a problem - that is, wildlife should not be relocated to urban areas.If the animal is sick, old, or injured, and I do not think that it stands a good chance of survival, or if the law dictates that I must, I will humanely euthanize the animal. It is my belief that the most humane thing is to put an animal down. Overall, I care a lot about the animals that I deal with, and I aim to be very humane. Can't the city or county take care of the problem for free?No. There is no city animal control, and the county animal services handles only domestic animals - dogs and cats. They handle things such as bite reports, pet abuse complaints, domestic disputes, barking or dangerous dogs, etc. Wildlife control is specialty and skilled work, and not something to expect a government agency to take care of. If you have a problem with a dog or a cat, please call the county animal services. Note, if you have a cat problem that involves something like going into an attic or under a crawl space, the county will not handle it. In my biased recommendation, I suggest that you call the finest nuisance wildlife control operator in the land - Ronnie Crowder of Kritter GitterCan't my regular pest control company take care of this?Almost certainly not - pest control companies are licensed and trained in poison use, particularly for insects. They usually spray poison on the yard or house, and charge for monthly or quarterly contracts. They use the same methods when they try to control mice & rats (with inferior and costly results) and even have been known to illegally try to use poisons on other animals, such as bats. A wildlife problem is VERY different from an insect problem, and should be dealt with only by a professional nuisance wildlife trapper who has extensive experience dealing with wildlife. Most wildlife cases are far more involved than insect cases, and involve hands-on removal of animals, not a simple spray solution. If you do call your regular exterminator to take care of a wildlife issue, beware - they may recommend a lousy company that charges obscenely high prices and gives a kickback to the exterminator. Do you use poisons?NO. Poisoning animals is a ridiculous, ineffective, inhumane, and often illegal approach to wildlife control. First of all, poisons are typically only used for rat control - rodenticides. There are no legal or registered poisons for use on other animals, such as squirrels, raccoons, opossums, etc. Second of all, poisons simply DO NOT WORK. They will kill only a percentage of the rats, maybe half, and if the root of the problem is not solved, new rats will keep coming and coming. Plus, you'll be left with stinking dead rats in your attic and walls. Finally, I consider poisons inhumane - it's a very unpleasant death that they cause - if you care, anyway. The most important thing to realize is that poisons only scratch the surface of solving the problem. I use a process called integrated pest management. IPM involves the combined use of trapping, excluding, and habitat modification to take care of the problem. If there are rats in your attic, I inspect the entire house and, most importantly, seal points of entry so that no rats can ever get into your home ever again, eliminate food access, and trap and remove all remaining rats, and the problem is permanently solved. Do you take care of termites or other insects?No. Insects fall under the umbrella of pest control, which is an entirely different field than nuisance wildlife control. If you have a problem with insects, you must contact a pest control company. Look in your local yellow pages under "pest control" for a phone number. What types of traps do you use?I use whatever trap is most effective and appropriate for the situation that I am dealing with (as long as it is approved by the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency. For the most part, I trap and remove animals in humane cage traps. Oftentimes, I am able to use one-way exclusion doors to let animals get out of homes, but not back in. I do not use lethal traps such as body-grip traps. These are illegal in Tennessee anyway. What is your service range?I service the greater Tri-Cities area. I will travel further, often state-wide, for very large projects, such as commercial bat control projects. However, for the normal stuff, I pretty much stick within a 30 -mile radius of the Tri-Cities. Most birds are protected under the federal migratory bird protection act, though I will do occasional work like removing a hawk or owl stuck in a house. Do all wild animals carry rabies?Any mammal can potentially carry rabies. However, there's only a few animals that seem to be relevant rabies vectors. In Tennessee, it's mostly raccoons and bats that are of concern. B, fox, beavers, and some other animals may also carry and transmit rabies, but they're rare. Rabies is not terribly common here. I get phone calls like this all the time: "I just saw a raccoon outside during DAYLIGHT! It must have rabies!" This isn't true - raccoons are often active during daylight hours, especially females with young. Most cases of rabies transmission to humans in North America are actually caused by bats, but even this is a rare thing.
